From The President - By Charley

Dear Members:

I hope everyone had a great Easter Holiday and has had a chance to enjoy some of the great spring weather!

We had our Officers meeting on Thursday, April 20th to organize an agenda for our upcoming club meeting on May 13th. As usual, we will email the agenda topics about a week before the meeting for your review and questions. If you cannot attend the meeting please be sure to drop one of us your proxy vote for any items requiring a decision at the meeting.

We will have a BBQ after the meeting and I will also include club instructors in the invite. If you are interested in assisting with the BBQ to purchase food, cook, setup etc. please drop Tim Volk a note as I am sure he would appreciate the assistance.

I think everyone is aware that our internet connection in the hangar complex has been spotty after the fire in the A row of hangars caused us to lose our connection. Thanks to a team of members, I’m happy to report that our connection is now back up and running at a higher bandwidth than before at a lower cost. Many thanks to Dom, Kip, Geoff, and Steve who worked to establish our new connection! The WIFI logon name and password has not changed.

John Housley’s IAC chapter 61 assisted with a Scout aviation familiarization day on April 9th at Spirit that included a tower tour, time sitting in John’s Pitts and a touch and go demonstration by our own T.J. Smyka. (picture above just after the event) The wind was sporty and it sounds like a great time was had by all! These are the types of events that produce our future aviators, all it takes is a little exposure sometimes. Thanks John and T.J. for helping to spark and interest in aviation in youth!

Also, thanks to Kevin Gause and Mike Landgraf who have agreed to take the Cessna and the Arrow over to Wings of Hope for a plane wash on April 22nd. We have decided again this year to support this Wings of Hope fundraiser due to the good work this group does and the many ways they benefit our club. Please pass the word if you know of any other aircraft owners who could use a plane wash on the 22nd.

I look forward to seeing everyone at the club meeting on May 13!

Safe skies,

Charley

Treasurer's Report - by T.J

Fellow Members,

Please remember that payments should be sent, via PayPal, to: Stlouisflyingclub@gmail.com. Note that it will always carry Mike Piccirilli’s name; although it is a club account.

There are three items to note this month:

  1. The TacAir fueling price continues to increase ($6.45 up from $6.41 last month) while fuel prices in other places don’t appear to be going up as much; including the self-service pump at KSUS. We no longer see the fuel price fluctuations in our rental rates, but with the increasing prices it makes it all the more advantageous for you to fuel the planes other places and turn in a receipt for credit.
  2. I would like to highlight Charley’s recent e-mail about TacAir’s new policy to charge us $30 to move planes in and out of the hangar. This is something each member needs to be aware of and know that it can be avoided if you do the pulling/pushing yourself. If you elect to use the service, it will be added to your monthly billing statement.
  3. Please let me know if there are any questions that may benefit the group when we cover the finance presentation at the May meeting. I will be working on the presentation over the next couple of weeks and knowing if there is any confusion by the members at large will help me craft my talking points.

Thanks for all the receipts and quick payments. Any questions/receipts should be sent directly to me at tjsmyka@gmail.com.

   Maintenance - by John

N8746V Citabria 7ECA

Oil Leak - There was a small oil leak in the aluminum tube that provides oil pressure to the cockpit oil pressure gage and the oil pressure switch that turns the HOBBS meter on and off. Larry trouble shot the issue to a crack in the oil tube flare area. The tube was cut and re-flared. The line was pressure tested and ground run to verify no leaks.

N20843 Cessna 172M

No maintenance issues to report this month

N2242N Piper Arrow IV

  • Door Window Crack - A large crack developed in the entry door window. A new window was ordered and installed on 23 April. The new window is thicker (.187 vs .125) and is made from a new “solar control” material that block out all of the UV and over 99% of the UVA rays which helps keep the interior cooler.
  • Door Lock - The entry door lock was becoming very difficult to open/close. A new lock was installed on 23 April and Steve made new duplicate keys made for the entry door. Keep your existing entry door key as it still is needed for the baggage door.
