From The President - By Mike Piccirilli

Dear Members,

I'd like to formally welcome our newest member, Mike Warakomski, who finalized the purchase of Jeff's share on 18 August. All the current members approved Mike as a new member except Todd, who was on vacation and didn't have the opportunity. I witnessed the signing over of Jeff's membership certificate and have forwarded it to John. John will create a new certificate for Mike. I have also asked Todd to handle notifying the insurance company of the change.

Mike's BFR and medical are up the end of this month. As soon as he renews his medical, I will check him out on the club procedures and his BFR.

Marlin, since Jeff has the Cherokee at Spirit he kept his "Spirit Tenant" window sticker. Would you please let Mike know how to go about getting one for himself? I wasn't sure if you needed to contact the administration to add him to our roster.

Both Marlin and John took the 172 on long trips to Pennsylvania and the plane performed well, no squawks!

John has been doing some additional research on options for the interior and is anxious to share what he found. I'd like to set up a meeting to compare the materials and color samples, with other interested members, so we can finalize who, what, where and when the interior work will be done.

Happy Landings!

Treasurer's Report - by Marlin Sipe

The Adjusted Treasury had just a slight increase from $634 to $650 this month. The increase was small because of the timing of some of the fuel charges. Some fuel was charged to the old credit card which delayed billing to this month with the card's billing cycle.

I found cheap fuel on my trip paying per gallon rates of $2.51, $2.76, and $2.63.

Oil Analysis - We received the oil analysis results from the July 23rd oil change. The values look very good with no high or abnormal readings. The graph below, which normalizes values to reflect 50 hours between changes, indicates engine wear is back down to a low, steady level, especially the Silicon or dirt readings. The affect of using Avblend is shown starting with sample 11 below.

The following two Cessna Owner Advisories, SEB00-5AR1 and SEB03-3A were issued on July 28, 2003. The first one is applicable if we need to replace the McCauley wheels and brakes as they are no longer available. The second is applicable if we have a VR600A voltage regulator installed. We will check to see if this one is applicable.

Owner Advisory SEB00-5AR1

July 28, 2003

Dear Cessna Owner,

This Owner Advisory is to inform you that McCauley manufactured wheels and brakes are no longer available for your airplane. Service Bulletin SEB00-5 Revision 1 provides detailed instructions, a Cessna Service Kit and approval for the installation of Cleveland manufactured replacement wheels and brakes.

Compliance is recommended; should be accomplished whenever the McCauley manufactured wheels and brakes require replacement, or sooner if desired.

NOTE: Compliance with this revision is required for R182, TR182 and FR182 model airplanes if in compliance with the original issue of this Service Bulletin by installation of Service Kit SK182-120 or SK182-120A. Compliance with Revision 1 requires the weight and balance information to be recalculated using the information provided in SK182-120B.

The information contained in the referenced Cessna Service Bulletin shall be considered an amendment to the Cessna Manufacturer's Service/Maintenance Manual and should be accomplished within the specified time requirement.

Please contact a Cessna Single Engine Service Station for detailed information and if applicable, arrange to have Cessna Service Bulletin SEB00-5 Revision 1 accomplished on your airplane.

Owner Advisory SEB03-3A

July 28, 2003

Dear Cessna Owner,

This Owner Advisory is to inform you that Service Bulletin SEB03-3 has been issued. Your airplane is affected if a VR600A voltage regulator has been installed on it. SEB03-3 announces Service Kit SK210-170 which provides parts and instructions to replace an installed VR600A voltage regulator with a VR660 voltage regulator. If any of the related electrical system wiring was modified during the installation of the VR600A, the wiring shall be returned to the original manufactured configuration. Non-compliance with this service bulletin may result in fluctuating voltage output of the alternator system.

Compliance is mandatory; shall be accomplished within the next 100 hours of operation or 12 months, whichever occurs first.

The information contained in the referenced Cessna Service Bulletin shall be considered an amendment to the Cessna Manufacturer's Service/Maintenance Manual or Instructions for continued airworthiness, and must be accomplished for ongoing airworthiness compliance as required per 14 CFR Part (FAR) 43.13.

For airplanes that have installed a VR600A Voltage Regulator that was purchased from Cessna only, applicable parts credit and a labor allowance credit per airplane will be provided as follows:

0.7 man-hour to install KA210-170-1, 1.4 man-hours to install KA210-170-2, 3.3 man-hours to install KA210-170-3, 1.9 man-hours to install KA210-170-4. To receive credit, the work must be completed and a Warranty Claim submitted by a Cessna Single Engine Service Station within 30 calendar days of Service Bulletin compliance before the credit expiration dates shown below.

  • Domestic ......... January 28. 2004
  • International .... March 28, 2004

Please contact a Cessna Single Engine Service Station for detailed information and if affected, arrange to have Cessna Service Bulletin SEB03-3 accomplihed on your airplane.

Emails sent to the Club - John Heilmann

The Flying Club received the following two emails this month:

  1. We would like to invite you to see our new publication, "The Flying Life". The first issue just hit the newsstands. Where many publications focus on hardware and equipment, "The Flying Life" looks at the people side of aviation. As a family publication, that includes a section for the younger, future pilots, this is sure to be the magazine of choice for the home coffee table. (You know, the one to help convince the rest of the family that flying is a good thing!)

We look forward to your comments on the publication.

    Thanks and Soft landings,
    David Hunt

  2. Hello St. Louis Flying Club,

My name is Doug Cooper. I will be moving to the St. Louis area around the end of August for school. My reason for writing is that I am a flight instructor and I am looking for a few students to work with in the area. I do not wish to "rock the boat" if the club already benefits from an instructor, but if not and if anyone in the club could use any training, BFRs or IPCs, I would be glad to help. I would also be willing to lead flying club meetings, if the members are interested. Also, if you know of anyone else in the area looking for an instructor, please feel free to pass my information along to them.

My goals as an instructor are to pass on my knowledge and experiences to enable the student to achieve their goals safely, as well as to continue learning and improving upon my own skills. I am not sure about your insurance plan. I didn't see anything on the web about receiving compensation, but at this point I am not too concerned about pay.

A little about myself, I currently hold both CFII and MEI ratings. I will have my two year anniversary as an instructor this January, so I will be able to teach initial CFIs soon. I have taken the ATP written, and expect to complete the practical test by the end of next year. I obtained an Associates degree in Aeronautics Pilot Training from the Fox Valley Technical College and I have roughly 1,100 Flight hours, about 700 of which are as an instructor. I am currently employed by an FBO in Appleton Wisconsin, where I am now, as the Chief Flight Instructor. If you would like to meet me when I arrive, or if you have any questions, please feel free to ask. I look forward to hearing back from you.

    Sincerely,
    Doug Cooper
