From the President

Dear Members,

It was very sad to hear the news of Shiv's accident. Thanks to John H.'s e-mails that broke the news and updated us through the words of Shiv's niece. The NTSB Preliminary Report was issued but it will take some time for the investigation and data analysis to be completed and the final report issued. While we all love flying, we also realize there are some inherent risks. It's incumbent on us to reduce those risks through maintaining currency, training, recurrent education, preflight planning, knowing our personal minimums, etc. Be safe out there!

I wanted to make you aware of another place the club is being advertised to prospective members. AOPA has created a Flying Club page on their website and I have updated the St Louis Flying Club info including my name and phone number.

I have now sent in our 2012 tax return, along with a note explaining why we were late, with this initial filing. Since we are a not-for-profit, there is no tax due. The return is strictly informational (big brother watching us). Hopefully, we won't hear any feedback and I'll make sure we turn in next year's return well before the May 15th deadline.

The 172 annual is coming up soon and John has more info on his section. Please come out to lend a hand or just to socialize!

Happy Landings,

Treasurer's Report - by PIC

There was a lot going on this month impacting the spreadsheet (member out, member in, maintenance expenses, database subscription discounts for extended durations, remote fuel - savings and SUS fuel going back up). Here's the bottom line: Hourly rates up because of fuel increase to $79 and $103, monthly rate down $1 to $125 (thanks to Mike Landgraf getting a deal from Jepp at OSH) and share value up a little to $10,393.

Fly Safely!

  • Oil Change - The oil and filter were changed on August 18th and the oil analysis report is shown below. There was a jump in the iron readings this time but it is still within the normal range for this engine. The oil filter was cut open and there were no metal particles. All other readings are showing good trends.

  • Annual Inspection - the annual inspection is scheduled to start on Friday afternoon/evening and will hopefully be completed by Sunday evening. In addition to the normal annual inspection, I am planning to install a plug in the front engine baffle where we can plug in a trickle charger if needed to keep the battery charged and desulfated. We will also need to remove both magnetos for their 500 hour magneto inspections. If you are able to come and help out this weekend, please send me an email.

  • Prop Control - on August 6th, the prop control cable ball joint terminal was replaced with a new terminal. The old terminal was getting worn and needed replacement.
