St. Louis Flying Club Newsletter - 31 August 2019

From The President - By Steve

Dear Members:

It is hard to believe AirVenture 2019 is in the books and while I did not make it this year we had several members that did. None of the club planes were flown but at least three members made the trip. John Heilmann, Larry Wehrman and John Housley went and all had a great time. Lately I have been using a free app called SocialFlight to search for day trips with one of the planes. This app is easy to navigate and using it I quickly found 5 events in September that are within 100 miles. They include the LSA expo at Mt. Vernon, a fly-in/car show at Greenville, and pancake breakfasts at Lincoln and Zelmer. Any of these would be a good day trip.

Last month’s newsletter included a prohibition on aerobatic maneuvers in the RV. This was to allow us to complete a careful review of what had been tested and properly documented. The officers met and discussed a path forward; including any potential changes to the by-laws. We have begun working on that plan and will present a recommendation to the membership at the fall meeting to be held in October or early November. The officers will meet in September to set an agenda so if anyone has anything they would like to include send one of us a note. The Fall meeting will include the election of club officers. The term is a minimum of one year and I encourage anyone with an interest to contact me.

We have some great Fall weather coming and I hope you can get out in one of the planes to enjoy it.Don't forget the Air Show at Spirit September 7th and 8th and keep an eye out for the notams. We will probably see some restrictions Thursday thru Sunday.

   Maintenance - by John

N202CR RV-7A

  • Oil and Filter Change - On 28 Aug, the oil and filter were changed. The oil sample was mailed in for analysis.

N20843 Cessna 172M

  • Pilot Seat - On 14 Aug, the shear pin in the pilot seat vertical adjustment linkage broke and the seat could no longer be raised from the low position. On 15 Aug, a new shear pin was installed. While one of the seats was already out for the repair, we went ahead and did the Seat Rail/Seat inspection AD that has to be done every 100 hours.
  • Headphone Static Noise - We have been working to eliminate the annoying static noise in the headphones for sometime. There is no static noise when you transmit, receive, or when using the intercom to talk with the passengers. After checking all the potential causes of the static with no success, we swapped the GMA-340 Audio Panel between the Cessna and the Arrow. We flew the Cessna and the static noise was gone. The Arrow was then flown and surprisingly, there was no static noise. We sprayed contact cleaner on the Cessna GMA-340 contacts before putting it in the Arrow and this may have solved the issue.

N2242N Piper Arrow IV

  • Ammeter Spike - We received a squawk that the ammeter had a large spike occurring approximately every 7 seconds or so. We suspected this was caused by the Landing gear Hydraulic pump coming on every 7 seconds or so to try and maintain hydraulic pressure to hold the gear up. We jacked up the Arrow and retracted the gear and expected the pump would turn on in 7 seconds but it didn't. There were no leaks in the hydraulic system and the landing gear system worked perfectly. We then started to check all the connections at the main and avionics bus bar and found that a circuit breaker screw had backed off slightly causing a high resistance that was causing the spike. After tightening all the bus bar screws, We test flew the aircraft and there were no ammeter spikes.
