St. Louis Flying Club Newsletter - 28 January 2011

From The President - By Todd Michal

Dear Members,

The club officers held a meeting last week. January and February are busy months for the club so there was plenty to discuss at the meeting. While renewing the insurance with Star, Chris recommended that we review the current valuations on the aircraft to set the insured value at an appropriate level. John and Pic ran independent valuations on VRef and found that the value we have been carrying for the C-172 is about right while the Arrow value has decreased about 5% from last year. The insurance hull values will be reduced accordingly saving us a small amount on the insurance premium.

John has been researching the on-board weather integration for the Arrow. He plans on ordering the Garmin Aera 510 GPS unit with XM weather and panel mounting tray as approved at the club meeting over the next few weeks. If all goes well with the Arrow inspection next month, we may be able to install the unit during the annual. We continue to have occasional drop outs with the Arrow GNS430W. A switch to a new ELT will be required to finally solve this problem. John will continue monitoring the prices on the 406 MHZ ELT's to decide when to make the switch.

I hope to see many of you at the Arrow Annual which is planned to start the last weekend of February.

Happy Takeoffs!

Todd

Treasurer's Report - by Mike McBride

Retail fuel prices at TACAir rose slightly in January, to $5.63 per gallon; that raised our hourly flight rates by $2 on each aircraft, to $66 (N20843) and $89 (N2242N). Flight hours were about flat with December. Treasury and Adjusted Treasury balances are strong as we prepare for annual inspection on the Arrow.

This month we have adjusted the valuations of the aircraft; in particular, the valuation of N2242N has reduced to reflect the additional time on the engine since the purchase of the plane last January. With these valuation adjustments, member share values reduced slightly.

Fly safely!

Mike

   Maintenance - by John

N20843

  • Turn Coordinator - The turn coordinator was removed on 3 Jan and returned to Century Instruments for warranty repair. The repaired Turn coordinator was reinstalled on 16 Jan.
  • Nav light switch - We had a squawk on 28 Jan that the Nav light switch was working intermittently. I plan to try contact cleaner to clean the contacts and if that doesn't work, order a new switch.
  • Annual Inspection - The Cessna annual inspection is planned to start on 29 July.

N2242N

  • Annual Inspection - The Arrow annual is planned to start on 24 Feb.
  • Tire Change - The LH Main tire and tube were replaced on 28 Jan 2011. The wheel bearings were also regressed.
