From The President - By Todd Michal

Dear Members,

The Cessna annual inspection started on 30 July and record heat wave in St Louis is making it very uncomfortable. Thanks to John, Pic, and Dale for working on the annual over the weekend. Next year, the Cessna annual will be at the end of August which will hopefully be a little cooler. Until the annual is completed in Hanger No. 5, the Arrow will be parked in Hanger No. 23.

PIC suggested that we set up a page on the website for members to describe fly-in destinations that would be interesting for other members. Here are 2 places PIC flew to over the past several weeks. If you fly somewhere interesting, send John a note (with photos if available) to add to the website.

  • Bloomington, IL - On Friday, 22 July, I (PIC) flew the Arrow, with Phil Self, to Bloomington, IL (KBMI) for dinner at CJ's restaurant on the field. We were surprised to actually find an airport restaurant that had a waiting line to be seated. Rather than the long wait, we ate on the patio which was in the shade and had a breeze blowing. Friday night was all-you-can-eat Walleye night ($8.95) - quite a deal (that's why there was a line).

  • Bismarck, MO - On 24 July, I (PIC) flew the C-172 to Bismarck, MO, H57 (50 mi south of SUS). Sleepy, but great, airport with a 2,000' runway. I walked into town (about a mile) and had breakfast at Sissy's Corner Grill. I had the Big Breakfast (2 eggs, 2 pieces of meat - bacon, sausage link or patty, 2 pancakes and hash browns) for $5.95. Sissy's has a sign on the door that they are only opened from 8 - 12 on the weekends (all 3 meals during the week). Sissy's is across the street from the empty train station (it looks like the town has seen better days). I had a good conversation with a couple of local pilots (the tie-downs used to be full but no more - no gas either - not enough demand). I've included some pictures. Great change of pace destination with a nice 2,000' runway to test out you short field technique.

    Happy Takeoffs!

Treasurer's Report - by Mike McBride

Fuel prices remained stable this month, and flight rates are at $71 and $95 per hour for the C172 and Arrow, respectively. Flight time was fairly strong for the Arrow at almost 27 hours, while the C172 flight time was moderate at just under 14 hours. Treasury and checking account balances remain strong. Fly safely!

    • The annual inspection is underway and the compressions results were as expected for a recently overhauled engine #1-78/80, #2-77/80, $3-78/80, #4-78/80. The oil and filter were changed and the left main tire and tube were replaced. Thanks to Dale and Pic for helping with the annual on Saturday and Sunday. The storm moving through on Saturday afternoon dropped the temperatures down to 82 in the hanger which made for good working conditions. Sunday was brutal as the temperature in the hanger reached 100 degrees at 3:00. Jerry loaned us a large fan which helped create a breeze but it's still 100 degree air moving around.

    • Attitude Indicator - The attitude indicator failed on Sunday, July 24th and was sent to Kings Avionics in New Century, Kansas for repair. They replaced the inner and outer gimbal bearings and realigned and recalibrated the attitude indicator to specifications. With Dale's help, the Attitude indicator was reinstalled on 30 July. The ground and flight ops check showed the AI, vacuum system, and autopilot all worked correctly.
    • RH Main Tire - The RH main tire and tube were changed on 30 July. The bearings were cleaned and regreassed.
