From the President

Dear Members,

Please help me welcome Dale Hofstetter to the club as he has finalized the purchase of Paul Carpenter's share. Dale day job is flying Falcons and Hawkers around the globe for Monsanto. Welcome Dale!

I wanted to thank Charley for coordinating quite a few odds and ends over the last month!

  • Negotiated a 10% discount at the Spirit Pilot Shop for all members of our club (just ask for it)
  • Submitted our MO Sec'y of State annual corporate filing
  • Scheduling our November club meeting (November 9th)
  • Purchase of the new FlyTies tie-down system
  • Restocking the cleaning supplies and explaining the difference in them (please follow his suggestions)
  • Helping me troubleshoot our IRS filing (more in the next paragraph)!

Thanks for all the effort Charley!

Chris's wife Barbara prepared our tax form (not-for-profit filing, no tax due) in early June and submitted it electronically. Unfortunately, the IRS rejected it. After weeks of getting no where, Charley called the IRS and found out the step we missed in the process. Though we had a Federal Tax ID number, we weren't in the IRS system as a not for profit corporation. Charley was able to get our application submitted on-line. Unfortunately, it takes 6 weeks to get registered. I'm going to personally submit our IRS forms once the waiting period is up. Unfortunately, with all this confusion, we have missed the due date. Charley again contacted the IRS and got the form we need to submit to avoid the late fee. Hopefully this will all be over with next month.

I wanted to make you aware of an on-line FAA test on taxi and runway markings. The FAA Taxi Test! Pilots put themselves and others in danger every day by missing important airport signage, lighting and markings. We know the markings for the most part, but why do smart pilots still make mistakes? Are you at risk for making the same mistakes? Can you pass it?"

Happy Landings,

Treasurer's Report - by PIC

With the sale of Paul's share, the last Limited member share has now been upgraded. The cost of fuel has finally gone down, by almost 10%. This lowered the hourly rates to $75 and $99 for the 172 and Arrow respectively. The share value went up slightly to $10, 345.

Fly Safely!

   ADS-B Update - by John

The midwest ADS-B gap is starting to close as shown in the two views of ADS-B coverage below. The upper view shows coverage as of Feb 2013 and shows a large area around St Louis with no coverage. The lower view shows coverage as of the end of June and much of the gap area is now covered. An FAA contractor is installing a new ADS-B Ground Antenna on the northwest corner of the St Louis Downtown airport (KCPS) behind the Parks College hangar as shown in the aerial photo below. Construction of the 60 ft. AGL (470 ft. MSL) lighted tower was to be completed by the mid-July, 2013 so the St Louis area may be covered by now. I will be heading up to Oshkosh this Sunday and will see what the latest options are for adding ADS-B weather and traffic to our aircraft. At the next club meeting, we can discuss the options and see if we want to stay with our XM weather subscription or switch to ADS-B.

   Maintenance - by John

N20843

There were no maintenance actions on the Cessna this month.

N2242N

On July 12th, Steve had a flat nose tire on landing at Dexter Municipal airport. Steve was able to find someone on the field who gave him a new tube and used tire and helped him install it on the Arrow. We don't often have maintenance issues while the planes are on trips and it was great that Steve was able to find someone to help him get back in the air. WIth the lack of maintenance facilities at many airports, just getting a tire replaced can be problematic. We are going to send a new tube and used tire back to the person at Dexter that was so helpful.
