From The President - By Mike Piccirilli

Dear Members,

Hope you've been able to take advantage of some of this beautiful weather and go flying! I know I need to!!!

I'm happy to say that I have successfully completed my mission to get the paint. As in any project, it was more difficult than thought. I visited the paint shop in St. Charles and successfully got the types and reference numbers for the paint colors. Since we needed enough to spray it, and he didn't have any in stock, I then ordered a quart of white and a quart of the dark green. By the time you add the cataylst or activator required, just those 2 colors cost $200. I figured that the light green and gold didn't really need to be touched up (and even if they have to we could probably find a close match with an automotive type touch-up applicator). See my detailed paint write up. I think that we have everything our painter would need (I would like him to read this write up and verify he can handle this type painting).

John has also been busy and has ordered the cooling fan and will order the intercom shortly (total about $450). The next thing on our wish list was the interior. I see the needs as:

  1. Headliner: I think we can just get some spray adhesive and put back up our current one
  2. Carpet: Airtex makes direct replacement ones for $291, what color? I think John has the color samples.
  3. Seats: Airtex charges $915 for new seats, cushions, and map pockets. Another company, Fly by the Seat, makes slip covers for $350. I don't believe the slip covers would allow access to the map pockets.
  4. Side Panels: Airtex charges $593.

I'd like to have a club meeting to figure out how much money is available and decide on the above options, colors, and to plan out how we are going to do the work described (do we take the seats out and do them at the airport or let people take them home to do). Has anyone done this type of interior work before or read an article about someone doing it? Maybe we just replace the carpet and headliner at this annual and have the meeting afterwards to decide on the rest of the interior work. John, please take a look at the carpet samples and suggest colors that the members could vote on.

John and Randy are working to set up the annual time around their travel schedules. The two dates being looked at are April 19th or the 26th. We all need to be willing to help out where we can.

Happy Landings!

Treasurer's Report - by Marlin Sipe

Not much to report. Looks like the oil change is due in about 6 hours, so it's probably reasonable to wait until the annual for a change.

Treasury had a slight increase, and is still in great shape..

   Maintenance - by John Heilmann

Jeff reported that the beacon switch is stuck in the "on" position. Randy ordered two new switches (one spare as the others switches are also 27 years old) from C&D and they should be in sometime this week. The switch PN is S2160-1 (Figure 58 Index 80 in the Cessna 172 IPC) and will run about $2.50 to $4.00. Randy plans to install the new switch on March 22nd.

We are planning for the annual inspection to start on either the 19th or 26th of April. We will probably do the Annual at C&D Aviation as in previous years and then move the aircraft to a nearby hanger to install the intercom and avionics cooling fan. Any help from the members is greatly appreciated. Additional information will be provided by email as the schedule firms up and in the next newsletter .

We received two Cessna Owner Advisory Letters last month as follows:

SEB02-2A Inspection of Flamable Fluid Carrying Hoses/Lines - This Owner Advisory is to inform you that an inspection of all flamable fluid carrying hoses/lines and oxygen lines in the cabin area of your airplane is required. The lines shall be inspected for leaks, cracks, dents, kinks, chafing, security, corrosion and/or deterioration. Any hose or line found to have any of these conditions shall be replaced. Non-compliance with Service Bulletin SEB02-2 could result in a flammable fluid or oxygen leak in the cabin area that could create the potential for fire. This special one time inspection shall be accomplished within the next 100 hours of operation or 12 months, whichever occurs first.

SEB02-3A Vacuum Pump Replacement Time - This Owner Advisory is to inform you that Service Bulletin SEB02-3 has been issued to provide replacement time requirements for engine driven dry vacuum pumps, vacuum pump drive couplings and electric standby vacuum pumps. SEB02-3 requires replacement of vacuum system components as follows:

  1. Replace engine driven dry vacuum pumps not equipped with a wear indicator every 500 hours of operation, or replace according to the vacuum pump manufacturer's recommended inspection and replacement interval, whichever occurs first.
  2. Replace electric standby vacuum pumps not equipped with a wear indicator every 500 hours of operation or 10 years, or replace according to the vacuum pump manufacturer's recommended inspection and replacement interval, whichever occurs first.
  3. Replace engine driven vacuum pump drive couplings at vacuum pump replacement or every 6 calendar years, whichever occurs first.

NOTE: For a vacuum pump equipped with a wear indicator, replace pump according to the vacuum pump manufacturer's recommended inspection and replacement intervals.

NOTE: If the manufacturer of the vacuum pump or the vacuum pump drive coupling has a shorter/more restrictive replacement interval, then that interval shall be used as the pump and/or drive coupling replacement interval.

NOTE: When installing new dry vacuum pumps, use only S3346-1 or Cessna approved equivalent gaskets. Cork type gaskets and other gaskets are not approved.

Compliance is mandatory; components shall be replaced as stated in the Accomplishment Instructions of Service Builetin SEB02-3.

An initial inspection to determine total time in service of installed applicable vacuum pumps and drive couplings shall be accomplished within the next 100 hours of operation or 12 months, whichever occurs first.

The information contained in above Cessna Service Bulletins shall be considered as amendments to the Cessna Manufacturer's Service/Maintenance Manual or Instructions for continued airworthiness, and must be accomplished for continued airworthiness compliance as required per 14 CFR Part (FAR) 43.13.
