St. Louis Flying Club Newsletter - 31 March 2021

From The President - By Steve

Dear Members,

Congratulations to Tim Volk on obtaining his certification as a flight instructor. As you know he took the Cessna 500 miles north to KCOQ in Minnesota for a week of training that ended with him passing the oral exam and the flight test. Tim has graciously offered to serve as one of the club check pilots and will be added to that list along with Mike Piccirilli and Todd Michal.

There is a lot more flying going on since the last newsletter. In addition to Tims trip to Minnesota Damien has the Arrow in Florida and the RV has been busy as well.

Speaking of the RV, I would like to take a moment to discuss managing cylinder temperatures. On a recent flight with Larry Wehrman he noted high cylinder head temps on my climb out. We discussed the issue with John Heilmann and decided my airspeed was too slow. A subsequent flight with a 120kt climb showed cylinder head temps much lower and provided for almost 1000fpm rate of climb at lower altitudes. We feel that, when safety allows, this should be the targeted airspeed during a climb.

I am including a link regarding Covid vaccines and flying that prohibits acting as PIC for 48 hours after a vaccination. The FAA says this is subject to change but this link should get you started if you have any questions. FAA Covid Guidance

I will end with a mention of our upcoming Spring meeting. The officers will get together in the next couple of weeks to set an agenda and pick a date and we would like hear from anyone that has something they want on the agenda.

Safe flying!

Steve

BILLING STATEMENT

BALANCE SHEET

Significant Discussions

  • Overall Cash - We continue to monitor the overall cash level.
  • Maintenance Funds - The maintenance funds are all at a sufficient level. Although the Cessna dipped into negative territory, it will return quickly at our current rate per hour.
  • Aircraft Valuation - Pic determined a fair value for all three aircraft as of 3/15. This resulted in the Cessna & Arrow being increased and the RV being decreased. We will revalue the aircraft again at 9/15.

    Dues

    2020 vs 2021 Insurance

Although we are not adjusting dues, a reminder of how we currently allocate them:

   Maintenance - by John

N202CR RV-7A

  • oil Change - On 29 March, Larry changed the oil and the break-in Mineral oil was removed. 7 quarts of Phillips X/C 20W50 and 11 oz Camguard were added. An oil sample was sent in for analysis. A compression test was done and the results are good; #1-76/80, #2-75/80, #3-78/80, #4-76/80.
  • RH Tire - On 29 March, Larry changed the RH tire and tube. In this case, the tire was worn due to normal wear. The wheel bearings were greased and new brake pads installed.
  • Nose Gear Tube - On 12 March, the Nose wheel inner tube was replaced due to a slow leak. The wheel bearings were degreased and the nose wheel was reinstalled.
