St Louis Flying Club Newsletter - 15 May 1999

From The President - By Mike Piccirilli

Dear Members,

It was nice to see everyone at the annual meeting. Included in this newsletter will be the minutes from the annual meeting, and a revised Articles of Association and By-Laws, which incorporate the changes we discussed at the meeting. Congratulations on all the current officers being re-elected!

The only pending new business item I remember is buying a new radio. The plan would be to sell the #2 unit, put the #1 unit where the #2 was and have the new unit in the #1 spot. Randy has a unit in mind that would require no panel modifications, have 720 channel capability, and have flip/flop channel capability. He is researching prices. Mike Russell is the only member that hasn't agreed to the new radio, in principal, since he had to leave early and wasn't present during the discussions.

Happy Landings,

Mike Piccirilli

Treasurer's Report - by Marlin Sipe

Maintenance Corner - from Marlin Sipe

At the meeting, we talked about possibly replacing one of the comm radios. We researched the Michel MX-llR, which is a direct replacement for what we have in the plane. Some info is included in with the newsletter below. We found a price of $835 plus $10 shipping from American Avionics, and a price of $850 (plus unknown shipping) from somewhere else. That comes out to $120 per person. List price is $1095. If we decide to replace the radio, I will search harder to see if there's a better price, but this gives us a good idea what it will cost us.

If you want to look at the info on the web for yourself, you can find some info at: http://www.americanavionics.com/cgi-local/shop.pl/SID=1006634411.18351/page=mx11.html

Replacing the radio would give us a more reliable radio with more capabilities. Some of us would feel more comfortable flying IFR with a new radio. Give it some thought and we will see what everyone thinks in about a week.

MX11 COMM from TKM Radios

The MX 11 operates on either 12 or 24 volts, and features a 10 channel memory "Flip-Flop" capability and 760 comm channels. The MX 11 COMM is designed as a slide-in replacement for the Narco COM 11, COM 11A, COM 11B, COM 111, COM 111B and the COM 120. The unit will replace the COM 10 and COM 110 when the Nav 10 and Nav 110 are not used in the system. The MX 11 includes an install kit and tray.

Annual Meeting Minutes, 28 April 1999 - by Todd Michal (Secretary)

The annual meeting of the Saint Louis Flying Club was held on April 28, 1999 at the Jet Corp terminal building, Spirit of St. Louis Airport, Chesterfield, Missouri. In attendance were Mike Piccirilli (President), Mike Russell (Vice President), Marlin Sipe (Treasurer), Todd Michal (Secretary), Randy Skyles (Maintenance Officer), John Ganahl, and Jerry Graklanoff.

The meeting was called to order by Mike Piccirilli. The first order of business was the election of new officers. A short discussion ensued in which Mike Piccirilli indicated he would like to relinquish the president job to another member. No members volunteered for the position, however, and the election of officers proceeded. The following officer positions were voted on:

PositionNominationVote Results
PresidentMike PiccirilliApproved
Vice PresidentMike RussellApproved
TreasurerMarlin SipeApproved
SecretaryTodd MichalApproved
Maintenance OfficerRandy SkylesApproved
Scheduling OfficerBarb SkylesApproved

All officers were elected by unanimous decision.

After the election of officers, the job duties of the vice president were discussed. One of the duties of this position as described in the club by-laws is to maintain a log of the medical and bi-annual flight review records of all club members. In addition, the vice president is required to notify each club member before the expiration of their medical or bi-annual. Jerry Graklanoff expressed concern over the potential legal ramifications this wording in the event of an accident. The general feeling was that this wording did not offer the club any benefit and a motion was made to strike this duty from the vice presidents job description in the by-laws. The motion was seconded, a vote ensued, and the motion carried.

Marlin Sipe reported that the fixed costs (personal property tax, insurance, shade port rental) currently add up to $54 per person per month. Marlin made a motion to increase the monthly dues to $55 per person. A vote was taken and the motion was approved.

Additional discussions were held regarding the possibility of moving the registration of the aircraft to Illinois to eliminate the clubs personal property tax liability. Jerry Graklanoff agreed to investigate this further and report back to the club.

Marlin Sipe brought up the need to drop the half-hour minimum charge from the clubs by-laws. This was voted on and approved by the club previously but the wording had not been removed from the by-laws.

The weak number two communications radio was discussed and Marlin agreed to research the cost of replacing this radio and place the information in the next newsletter.
